EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – A powerful, late winter storm will continue to track to the south of Wisconsin, wrapping bands of precipitation northward through the state through much of Wednesday morning. We are seeing a steady transition across Western Wisconsin, and that will continue overnight as colder air arrives from the northwest. Snow will stick to non-paved surfaces initially, but it won’t take very long before roads become snow covered and slippery. By morning, temperatures will be at or below freezing for most of our area. The other factor will be the increasing north winds over 20 mph, with gusts possibly up to 45 mph into Wednesday morning. A First Alert weather day will be in effect through Wednesday afternoon for these conditions and the significant impacts to travel.
We go into First Alert tonight and throughout the day tomorrow thanks to the wind and accumulating snow in the forecast.(WEAU)
Once the snow begins to stick, snowfall rates of 0.5-1.00″/hour can be expected at times through early Wednesday morning, along with significant blowing snow. Visibility will be greatly reduced, leading to a difficult early morning drive. If you have to be out on the roads, be sure you’re giving yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. As the low begins to move farther east, the main snow band will slide away, leaving the area with scattered flurries and snow showers by early afternoon. We still expect the majority of our area to pick up a 4-7 inch accumulation, with a pocket of higher totals over western locations. Farther south it will take longer for the transition to occur, so amounts will be a bit less. While drifting should be limited due to the wet nature of the snow, total accumulations may be tough to measure, with the expected strong winds.

Road conditions should improve into the afternoon as temperatures hover near freezing, but the winds will remain on the gusty side. Get all the latest information on this system here on the weather page, on the 13 First Alert weather app, and our daily scheduled WEAU newscasts.
