We’re one round in to the Masters, and Justin Rose has surged ahead of the rest of the field at Augusta National.
Rose posted a 7-under 65 on Thursday to open the first major championship of the year. It matched his best round ever at Augusta, and marked his fifth time leading after the opening round of the tournament in history.

Scottie Scheffler posted a very casual bogey-free round to start his green jacket defense on Thursday. It made him just the fourth defending champion to post a clean scorecard to open the Masters in the last three decades. That got him to 4-under, but still four shots back of Rose.
Scheffler’s playing partner, amateur Jose Luis Ballester, got into a bit of trouble in Amen Corner, too. Ballester had to stop and pee near a creek at the 13th green, but he did so confidently and said he’d do it again given the opportunity. Whether that ends up getting him into trouble with Augusta National remains to be seen.
Ludvig Åberg and Corey Conners matched Scheffler at 4-under on the week, and Bryson DeChambeau finished a shot back at 3-under. Rory McIlroy, despite being in the mix late, made a double bogey on two of his final four holes to finish at even par.
