Tigers top Yankees in snowy series opener, extend win streak to 4

DETROIT — Andy Ibanez hit a three-run home run and Casey Mize threw six strong innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 6-2 on a flurry-filled Monday afternoon at Comerica Park.

The Tigers (6-4) have won four in a row and six of their last seven. They have two more this week against the Yankees (6-4).

The game-time temperature was 38 degrees and snow flurries fell for much of the early part of the game. But the players — and 14,132 hardy fans — braved the elements in a game that was originally scheduled for the evening but was moved due to the disagreeable weather.

Tigers starter Casey Mize allowed a run on four hits in six innings, striking out six. He got six of his 10 whiffs on his signature splitter.

Tigers third baseman Andy Ibanez had only two infield singles in 17 at-bats this year before launching a three-run homer to left field off Yankee starter Carlos Rodon in the third inning.

The Tigers tacked on two more with Justyn-Henry Malloy’s RBI single in the seventh.

The Tigers’ defense did their part to help keep the Yankees in check.

Yankees designated hitter Ben Rice hit a one-out triple to the wall in right-center in the third inning, but Tigers catcher Jake Rogers nabbed him moments later.

Rogers fired a bullet behind Rice and Ibanez laid on a perfect tag at third base. It was the second time in three days that Rogers had thrown behind a runner to steal an out.

In the seventh inning, Oswaldo Cabrera hit a liner that ricocheted off the glove of Tigers reliever Tyler Holton. Shortstop Javier Baez fielded the ball and made a backhand flip to second to start an inning-ending double play.

On the other side of the coin, two errors on the same play by second baseman Colt Keith in the eighth inning led to an unearned run for the Yankees.

Reliever Tommy Kahnle, who spent six seasons with the Yankees, pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish the game for the Tigers.
