There have been numerous delays to the production of The Batman 2, and a recent rumor has suggested that the postponement has been due to some issues in director Matt Reeves‘ life. After a successful first outing for Robert Pattinson’s Batman in 2022, Warner Bros. wasted no time in announcing a sequel to the film at that year’s CinemaCon. The sequel was initially scheduled to come out in October 2026, but has since been delayed several times.
While neither Warner Bros. nor DC Studios has provided any major reason behind the delays to The Batman 2, ongoing speculation claims that trouble in Reeves’s personal life is the cause.
In a recent update, Grace Randolph remarked that Matt Reeves is going through a predicament similar to Chadwick Boseman’s situation. The Black Panther star tragically passed away due to colon cancer in 2020, but chose not to disclose any information about his condition to the public.
Talking about The Batman 2’s delays in her latest YouTube video, the renowned internet scooper stated, “If you knew what Matt Reeves was dealing with, you’d leave him alone. I mean, it’s not a Chadwick Boseman situation, but it’s close. You should leave Matt Reeves alone.”
Matt Reeves himself alluded to being unwell, noting that he was dealing with some “stuff” during an interview with Deadline at the 2025 Golden Globes red carpet event. Praising The Penguin star Colin Farrell for his support, Reeves said, “There’s [been] a lot of stuff going on in my life in the last year or so, and he’s been such a good friend. [He’s] such a beautiful man. We’re still finishing the script, and there have been so many things going on. This next year is about getting into production and getting the movie going.”
With Robert Pattinson reportedly being considered for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 3, The Batman 2 could experience further delay in its release date. At the time of writing, the much-awaited Batman sequel is on track to hit theatres on October 1, 2027.
