Priyansh Arya has emerged as PBKS’s most dangerous weapon this IPL season, amassing 158 runs at a staggering strike rate of 205.19. With 15 fours and 11 sixes already to his name, the explosive opener threatens to derail SRH’s campaign further unless they implement a targeted strategy to neutralise his impact.
Exploiting Technical Vulnerabilities
Our detailed analysis of Arya‘s batting patterns reveals clear weaknesses that SRH can capitalise on. Despite his remarkable overall strike rate, there are significant variations in his performance against different bowling types and lengths:

While Arya punishes pace bowling mercilessly (SR 227.66), he’s considerably less effective against spin (SR 170.00). More importantly, he’s been dismissed three times by spinners compared to just once by fast bowlers, highlighting a clear vulnerability.

Phase-Based Containment Plan
Given that Arya scores at 201.96 in the powerplay and accelerates to 211.54 in the middle overs, SRH needs a phase-specific approach:
- Powerplay (Overs 1-6): Open with Zeeshan Ansari‘s leg spin from one end, targeting Arya with a good length line on middle-and-off. This significantly reduces his scoring rate while creating dismissal opportunities. From the other end, Mohammad Shami should focus exclusively on yorkers, which Arya struggles against (SR 50.00).
- Middle Overs (7-15): Continue with Zeeshan Ansari’s leg-spin with a defensive mid-wicket field to cut off Arya’s preferred scoring region. Alternate with Kamindu Mendis’s left-arm orthodox to create angle variations, keeping Arya guessing.
- Death Overs (16-20): If Arya survives into the death overs, Pat Cummins must execute wide yorkers with a 6-3 off-side field, eliminating his leg-side power game and forcing him to play low-percentage shots.
Field Placement Innovation
The data shows Arya heavily favours the leg side, with 65% of his boundaries coming in the arc between mid-wicket and fine leg. SRH should employ an unconventional 5-4 leg-side field during the powerplay, with a short fine leg, square leg, mid-wicket, wide mid-on, and long-on, challenging him to score through the off side against spin.
By implementing this comprehensive strategy that combines the right bowlers, optimal lengths, and innovative field placements, SRH can effectively neutralise Priyansh Arya’s impact and significantly improve their chances against PBKS in their upcoming encounter.
