Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli is expected to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal as a graduate transfer, per a source close to the signal-caller.
247Sports was the first to report.
The New Jersey native appeared in 21 games for the Irish over the last three seasons. Angeli will finish his time at Notre Dame completing 58-of-80 passes for 772 yards, 10 touchdowns and just one interception.
Angeli played a key role in the Fighting Irish reaching the National Title game last season, as his heroics in the Orange Bowl gave Notre Dame momentum. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder engineered a 13-play, 52-yard drive over the last 2:18 of the first half that ended in a Mitch Jeter field goal. On the drive, Angeli completed 6-of-7 passes for 44 yard,s filling in for Riley Leonard.
In 2023, Angeli earned his lone start of his career in Notre Dame’s 40-8 win over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl. Angeli went 15-of-19 for 232 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 27 yards in the win.
This spring, Angeli returned to the Notre Dame program to battle it out for the starting quarterback position with CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey.
There were certainly opportunities for Angeli to move on, but he felt South Bend was where he was supposed to be.
“I think this is exactly where I’m meant to be right now, to be honest with you,” Angeli said in March. “Notre Dame is the place for me and I’m exactly where I want to be.”
A three-man competition isn’t ideal, but the silver lining for Angeli at the time was that Notre Dame passed on bringing in a transfer quarterback for the first time in two seasons.
Yet, Angeli wasn’t focused on anyone but himself this spring.
“It doesn’t matter if they brought one in or not, I’m going to focus on my reps and control what I can control,” explained Angeli. “The coaching staff is going to do what they think is best for the team and that’s what I’m going to do as well.”
Angeli believes he can start and will likely get that opportunity this fall.
“I think my mindset,” Angeli said of his strengths. “My intangibles. I think I understand the game well. I feel like I’m a great leader in the locker room. Quite frankly, I know how to make plays. I know my strengths and attributes that I can make every throw on the field. I can extend plays and get a first down if need be, and I can operate and lead the team.”
As a high school prospect, Angeli held offer from Arizona, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Iowa, LSU, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Old Dominion, Oregon, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, Stanford, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
