Lakers reward GM Rob Pelinka with multiyear extension, new title

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Rob Pelinka to a multiyear contract extension and named him president of basketball operations and general manager, the team announced Friday.

“For eight seasons, I have relied on Rob’s vision and leadership to do what’s best for the Lakers organization,” Lakers governor Jeanie Buss said in a statement. “I value his partnership and professionalism and believe in his ability to deliver championship-caliber basketball for Los Angeles and Lakers fans everywhere.”

This season, Pelinka’s trades for Dorian Finney-Smith and Luka Dončić changed the trajectory of the Lakers’ season. The Dončić trade, in particular, is considered one of the biggest trades in sports history. He also identified JJ Redick early in the Lakers’ coaching search despite the former player and broadcaster’s lack of coaching experience. The Lakers went 50-32 and earned the No. 3 seed, their best finish since their 2019-20 championship season.

Pelinka joined the Lakers in 2017 as general manager and was promoted to vice president of basketball operations in 2020. The Lakers won the 2020 title under his stewardship.
