The Ballard teaser trailer sees Titus Welliver’s Harry Bosch returning to the police department along with Maggie Q’s Renée Ballard. Ordered last November, the new Bosch: Legacy spin-off is an upcoming entry in the crime drama universe, following Detective Ballard as she tries to prove herself by working on cold cases. Though Legacy is coming to an end with season 3, the upcoming Renée Ballard series is expected to feature several returning faces from the established world.
Ahead of the release of Bosch: Legacy‘s finale, Prime Video drops a new trailer for Ballard, teasing how the titular character, the “punching bag” at the LAPD, will inevitably have a run-in with Welliver’s legendary former detective. As seen in the trailer, Ballard joins the department right when “everyone is so mad at the LAPD,” which puts her in an awkward position. To prove her worth, Ballard dives into the archive, which leads her to Bosch. Check out the trailer below:
What Ballard’s Teaser Trailer Means For The Bosch Universe
Ballard Makes Several Changes To Maggie Q’s Cold Case Detective
While the Bosch: Legacy season 3 finale is set to introduce Q’s detective, Ballard‘s teaser trailer hints that the spinoff might be the one to give answers to her origin story and how she met Harry Bosch. The trailer also indicates a book change for Ballard, who, in Michael Connelly’s novels, is an existing LAPD detective working the night shift before focusing on the cold cases. However, in the trailer, Ballard is teased to be “a new detective” who finds herself in a time of change.
Ballard has been a character in several of Connelly books, including one within the Lincoln Lawyer series, which has its own show on Netflix.
The tension between Ballard and Bosch at the end of the teaser trailer suggests that at least one detail about their relationship will be faithful to the books. In Connelly’s novels, Bosch and Ballard didn’t initially get along, but they developed a tight bond through working together. On the other hand, the official logline for Ballard teases Bosch being a much-needed help when the cold case detective uncovers a large conspiracy that puts her and her unit in danger. Clearly, their dynamic will be a key part of the new show.
Our Take On Ballard’s Teaser Trailer
Harry Bosch Is Back In Action
The teaser sees Maggie Q’s character struggling at work, and no matter how hard she tries, obstacles always make their way to her. This initially includes Harry Bosch, who seems to be someone coming to stop her from working the case rather than help, which is very different from their alliance in the Bosch: Legacy season 3 finale. How they manage to get to a place of trust and comfort is likely one of the key stories the new series will explore, and it will hopefully be a compelling one.
Coming to Prime Video on May 29, the new series will see Bosch returning to the police station. With Ballard being an active officer on the force, there could potentially be more interactions to come between Bosch and the LAPD. After exploring Bosch’s private investigator stage in three seasons of Bosch: Legacy, it would be nice to see Welliver’s titular character back in action again in Ballard.
