Cowboys could reunite with franchise legend after NFL Draft first round

The Dallas Cowboys had one of the surprise picks in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, locking in on offensive guard Tyler Booker with the 12th overall pick. Yet, after seeing future Hall of Famer Zack Martin retire from the NFL, perhaps it’s no surprise that the Cowboys re-invested in the offensive line, even if it was for a player that wasn’t expected to come off the board until the 20s.

Still, the Cowboys’ selection indicated that the team still feels like it needs to improve on offense. What’s more, the Cowboys weren’t able to secure their next starting running back after watching Rico Dowdle sign with the Tennessee Titans this offseason.

Many mock drafts had the Cowboys targeting Ashton Jeanty, but of course, he went much earlier to the Raiders at No. 6. Dallas could circle back and target a running back with their next draft selection, yet, they could have other plans to address the RB room.

Recently, Bleacher Report’s Scott Polacek suggested the Cowboys could always try to re-unite with Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas’ starting running back for seven of the past nine seasons.

“There are still some teams that may take a chance on him, including a familiar one,” Polacek wrote. “Yes, a return to the Dallas Cowboys might make some sense for the Ohio State product. After all, Elliott has plenty of experience playing alongside quarterback Dak Prescott, would surely be willing to take a smaller role for a team he knows so well and would provide some depth for a running back room that isn’t loaded with talent.”

After spending a season away from the Cowboys in 2023, Elliott returned to Dallas last year, but despite appearing in 15 games, he only started two. Ultimately, he was held to 74 carries for 226 yards and touchdowns.

“Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders and Deuce Vaughn don’t exactly make up the league’s best trio, and Elliott could come in as a goal-line back and perhaps vulture some touchdowns,” Polacek continued.

While Elliott clearly isn’t a starting-caliber back anymore, he could provide more experience while bringing familiarity to the Cowboys’ backfield. Odds are that the Cowboys aren’t done adding to the RB room, and Elliott could very well be their next acquisition.
