Premier League issue explanation as VAR overturn Liverpool goal after early blow

The Premier League have issued an explanation after VAR awarded Liverpool an equaliser against Tottenham.

Liverpool arrived at Anfield knowing they could seal the Premier League title if they avoided defeat against Spurs on Sunday. But supporters were left to sweat when Dominic Solanke headed the visitors ahead on 12 minutes.

However, the stunned Anfield crowd didn’t have to wait long until they got what they initially thought was the equalising goal.

Luis Diaz tapped into an empty net just four minutes later after Dominik Szoboszlai squared the ball across the six-yard box. But the linesman immediately raised his flag for offside.

VAR reviewed the goal, and the semi-automated offside technology swiftly found that Szobszlai was onside when he made his run in behind. The goal was eventually given and Liverpool could celebrate.

The Premier League issued an explanation on the decision. They wrote: “VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for Liverpool – and determined that Szoboszlai was in an onside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was awarded.”

And just four minutes later, Liverpool fans were out of their seat again as Alexis MacAllister fired home a go-ahead goal from 25 yards.

Their name appears to now be on the trophy with Cody Gakpo making it 3-1 in the 33rd minute.

Liverpool fans arrived at Anfield hours before kick-off to welcome the team’s coach to the stadium through a wall of smoke. One point today would mean Liverpool win the league in front of their home fans for the first time in almost 35 years.

The Reds’ Premier League title win in 2020 came during COVID, with no supporters allowed inside football stadiums.

Speaking ahead of the Tottenham clash, Slot admitted he’s aware of the pressure to win the Premier League today at Anfield. “First of all, that’s a big responsibility, because we are aware of the fact that the last time this club won the league it was COVID time,” he said.

“So everybody is looking forward to Sunday, but we know there’s still a job to be done, and that’s at least one point, and that’s what we know.

“And hopefully our fans know as well when they come to the stadium that that they support us in the best possible way they can, which they’ve done the whole season, and are aware of the fact that that we still need a point.

“That’s something we are definitely aware of here inside this building. So, it’s a nice game to look forward to, but it’s also a responsibility we have for Sunday.”
