The Carolina Hurricanes fell 3-2 in double overtime to the New Jersey Devils in Game 3 Friday night at Prudential Center.
Despite a third-period comeback, the Canes just couldn’t muster enough offensive pressure throughout the game and especially in overtime.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour along with captain Jordan Staal and Jalen Chatfield spoke with the media in New Jersey. Here’s what they had to say:
10 Takeaways: Hurricanes Drop Game 3 In Double Overtime
Rod Brind’Amour
On if there’s any positives he can take out of the game: Not particularly.
On what he didn’t like about the game: Start. Finish. There was a segment in there where we did fight back and tie it up. That was about an eight minute stretch where we were kind of good, but the rest was not our game. There’s a reason, they were good. Tip your hat to New Jersey. They did what they had to do and we were just not very good.
On special teams: That was the good part of the game. But it was kind of all for naught. Our kill did a great job sacrificing, blocking shots and doing what we had to do, especially in overtime where there were a couple of penalties there which you don’t usually see. We hung in there, but we were just hanging in there. That’s basically what was going on tonight.
On overtime: We didn’t get much after we tied it up. There was nothing after that. Better team won tonight, no question.
On the Jesperi Kotkaniemi shift to draw the eventual tying power play: Like I said, there were a stretch of about eight minutes where we were going pretty well. Had a chance there, I think Fishy got a breakaway on a shorty too. There were moments, but not enough.
On Frederik Andersen’s performance: Oh, he was great.
On if he’ll go back to Andersen for Game 4: We’ll see how he feels tomorrow. Will have a chat about it, for sure.
Jordan Staal
On takeaways from the game: I don’t think we played a great game, but obviously our special teams was great. Really kind of gave us the opportunity to win the game, but I thought our 5v5 play was average to below average really. You could feel it in the overtime and a lot of the game. They did a good job of putting it on us and just playing good playoff hockey. We weren’t really on that frame of mind and it showed.
On Frederik Andersen’s performance: Freddie obviously kept us in the game, really. Our special teams and Freddie were really kind of the difference in trying to squeak one out for the win, but there’s lots of things that we could have been better at. 5v5 from the forwards all the way down to the D. Just need to get back to our forecheck and all the stuff that we do well. We didn’t do that great tonight.
On the slow starts: We knew they were going to come and obviously a tough building. Crowd was buzzing. They had a couple of good shots and got the crowd going. But I think after the first, we settled in and played a good second really. But outside of that, I think our second period was our only good kind of period and like I said, special teams was good and Freddie was great.
On special teams: The PK was great. Boys were grinding, bailed me out on one. A couple of long shifts. Just finding ways to kill penalties. Sometimes it’s not pretty and boys were eating them and doing whatever they could. And obviously the power play was huge and gave us a chance. We just tried to squeak one out even though we weren’t playing our best.
Jalen Chatfield
On the resiliency and comeback effort: I think that’s in our room. We know we always have to battle every night. I think we just didn’t really find our game for the full 60. We’re going to have to learn from that and comeback better next game.
On the penalty kill: For sure. Freddie’s been outstanding all year and in the playoffs. I know the PK, we take a lot of pride in that in here. Each guy who steps over the boards, whether it’s a bad call or not, we want to kill it for each other and sacrifice our bodies and get the puck down. I think that’s why we have so much success.
On losing a close game: It sucks, but it’s hockey. We’ve all been here. Like I said, we’ll got better and starting next game, we expect to come out better.
On Frederik Andersen’s performance: He’s kept us in games all year and he’s been outstanding. It’s fun to play in front of him and it makes me go that much harder for him and for each guy in the room. I think we each play for each other and I think that’s where a lot of accountability comes in. You see a lot of guys with individual efforts and Freddie’s been outstanding for us. Really good.
On getting back to their game: I think we have a good team in here. We know that. We play hard, play for each other and when we play our game, we know what we’re capable of. It’s good hockey right now. I just think, for us, doing what we’ve been doing all year and fighting for inches, winning our 50/50s and sticking with it and playing a full 60.
On the power play success: It’s great. You always want your special teams clicking. The power play guys were moving the puck really well and it’s hard to play against them in practice. Just seeing them have success and keep building on that and building confidence is going to be huge for us moving forward. If they can score a few goals for us, that’s huge.
