The NBA has long taken a no-nonsense approach to foul language and inappropriate conduct, both on and off the court. Over the years, players have been hit with hefty fines for verbal outbursts, obscene gestures, and unsportsmanlike behavior.
This season, that strict enforcement has been especially visible. Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards has racked up over $380,000 in penalties, including a recent $50,000 fine after making inappropriate gestures toward a Lakers fan in Game 1 of this playoff series. Meanwhile, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant was fined $75,000 for making inappropriate gestures twice right before the playoffs.
However, Game 3 of the playoffs on April 25 between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Timberwolves shifted that narrative. Why? In a moment that left fans stunned, Donte DiVincenzo hurled an NSFW insult at a referee — and somehow walked away without so much as a warning.

With just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves were clinging to a 103-101 lead over the Lakers. Tension was sky-high. Catching a pass from Julius Randle on the left wing, DiVincenzo aggressively attacked the rim, challenging Rui Hachimura’s tough defense.
The shot missed, and to DiVincenzo’s visible frustration, no foul was called. To make matters worse, Luka Dončić grabbed the rebound, and in an effort to recover, DiVincenzo fouled him.
Frustrated beyond measure, DiVincenzo turned, pointed directly at the referee, and appeared to mouth the word “b***h” in full view of the cameras. In a league where even subtle criticisms can cost players thousands, this moment seemed destined for a fine — if not an immediate technical foul or ejection.
Shockingly, the officials let the moment slide. No technical was issued, no flagrant foul called, and no game-time punishment handed out. Even after the game, no statement was released regarding a fine or disciplinary action against DiVincenzo.
This lack of response raised serious eyebrows, especially given the NBA’s recent zero-tolerance stance. Players like his teammate Edwards and Morant have faced the full wrath of the league office for similar — or even milder — infractions. Yet DiVincenzo’s outburst seemingly vanished into thin air without consequence.
DiVincenzo’s Mentality After Game 3
The Lakers are struggling to find their footing in the playoffs. After their tough loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 25 (116-104), the Lakers now trail in the series 2-1, searching for answers as momentum shifts away from them.
Following the game, during the postgame press conference, DiVincenzo was asked about the Timberwolves’ current form and focus. Without hesitation, DiVincenzo emphasized that the team remains fully locked in.
“I mean, you just said it, attention to detail. Locking on the game plan, understanding who they have on the floor, what we want to do, what we want to take away, and what they want to get to. There’s still stuff to clean up. But it’s always great to try to clean it up with a win,” said DiVincenzo during the interview.
DiVincenzo’s performance in Game 3 reflected that mindset. In 31 minutes of action, he contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists, providing valuable energy on both ends of the floor.
In Game 4 on Sunday, April 27, both teams will battle as the Lakers look to tie the series while the Timberwolves aim to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
