COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Celebrations for Cinco de Mayo will be held across the Midlands on Monday.
WHAT IS CINCO DE MAYO?
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
It is celebrated more in the United States than in Mexico as a day to honor Mexican culture and heritage.
The significance of this day is that the Mexican army was greatly outnumbered against the French, and it boosted morale and stalled the French occupation of Mexico.
In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday, observed more in the towns surrounding Puebla, which was the site of the battle.
IS THIS MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY?
It is not Mexican Independence Day, which is on September 16.
