Deebo Samuel finally has a new home. On Saturday, the Washington Commanders sent a fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in order to acquire Samuel.
Samuel asked for a trade after the 2024 season. Rumors circulated about which team Samuel wanted to play for, which reminded us that it’s just rumors. San Francisco general manager John Lynch announced this week that the 49ers would likely grant Samuel’s trade request.
After Saturday’s trade, Samuel took to Instagram and seemed excited to head to Washington.
Why wouldn’t Samuel be excited? The Commanders have an elite young quarterback on a rookie contract. He will play for a creative offensive coordinator and can be a central figure in Washington’s continued renaissance.
Samuel has one year remaining on a contract extension he signed in 2022. The Commanders could choose to extend Samuel, or let him play out the final year of the deal. Either way, it’s a good move for all parties.
The trade does not become official until March 12.
