After making multiple moves in NFL free agency, the biggest need on the Tennessee Titans’ roster was at the EDGE position. General manager Mike Borgonzi finally decided to address the pass-rushing spot with a shocking move. The Titans are signing veteran free-agent EDGE Dre’Mont Jones, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Jones arrives in Nashville via a one-year contract worth up to $10 million.
Titans sign OLB Dre’Mont Jones to one-year contract worth $10 million
The Titans have plugged holes on the offensive line by signing Dan Moore and Kevin Zeitler. Wide receiver is still a massive need, but received a little attention via the arrival of Van Jefferson. Until Jones’ signing, EDGE was by far the biggest need that had gone unaddressed.
Jones was released from his contract in a cap-clearing move by the Seattle Seahawks prior to free agency. In 2024, the veteran defensive end recorded four sacks. It was a lackluster follow-up to a 4.5 sack debut season in Seattle, failing to live up to a three-year, $51.53 million contract signed with the Seahawks during the 2023 offseason.
The Seahawks played Jones almost exclusively on the edge throughout the previous two campaigns. It was a mismatch fit for Jones, who played more of an interior presence during an impressive stint with the Denver Broncos before cashing in with the Seahawks in free agency. It’s unclear where the Titans plan to play him, but considering their sizable hole at EDGE, that’s the most likely scenario.
Pro Football Focus credited Jones with 45 total pressures. His pass-rushing grade was a stellar 65.9. Jones struggled to defend the run as an individual defender, scoring a 45.5 from PFF in that department. It shouldn’t be as concerning in Tennessee, considering he’ll be playing alongside two strong run defenders in Jeffery Simmons and T’Vondre Sweat.
What the Titans need from Jones is pass-rushing production. As the depth chart currently stands, he’s their most promising EDGE defender alongside fellow veteran Arden Key. Another acquisition will almost certainly arrive via the 2025 NFL Draft, but depending on the round Borgonzi decides to further address the position in, it’s plausible that Jones is Dennard Wilson’s No. 1 edge rusher this coming season.
The Titans recorded a third-worst 32 sacks last season, and sack leader Harold Landry was released from his contract. Landry has since reunited with former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel in New England. Jones should bring some much-needed pass-rushing juice to Tennessee’s defense.
