Drake Maye was all smiles when he joined Kay Adams for a quick interview at the NFLPA Classic Golf Tournament in Mexico on Tuesday morning, reflecting an optimism that the second-year quarterback seems to have regarding the Patriots‘ future.
As for who he will be throwing the ball to in 2025 (or who might be blocking for him), those remain questions that are yet to be fully answered. Maye, for his part, told “Up & Adams” that he trusts Patriots management as the team navigates a busy offseason.
“Whatever they decide, the front office,” Maye said when asked if he would help pitch free agents on New England. “I think I’m out here to recruit if they want me to recruit. I’m out here to try to get anybody to come to New England. I think we’ve got some things going on in the future that I’m looking forward to, and looking forward to getting back out there.”
Maye, 22, is almost a year removed from the Patriots picking him third overall in the 2024 draft. He generated hope among New England fans as a rookie, showcasing his ability to push the ball downfield as a passer and maneuver in the pocket. Beyond those qualities, Maye worked his way into the lineup and showed he can survive a tough season.
The draft will once again play a big role for the Patriots, as New England holds the fourth overall pick in 2025. Recent projections have the Patriots picking Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, who can play both wide receiver and cornerback.
Still, the team also has major needs on the offensive line. Asked who he thinks New England should pick, Maye kept his thoughts general.
“I think you take the best player that early. Take the best player available,” he said, “so any one of those guys. I don’t want to put my foot in my mouth here, so just whoever wants to come play in New England, and win some football games.”
Maye was paired in the golf tournament with Patriots quarterbacks past and present. He filled out a four-player team alongside Seahawks quarterback Sam Howell (who also attended UNC), current Patriots backup Joshua Dobbs, and former Patriots backup Jacoby Brissett.
Asked what he brings to the table as a golfer, Maye was modest.
“I like to claim I’m a good putter.”
