As the start of the 2025 NFL Draft draws closer, the fact that no first-round trades have been made has become more apparent. That’s fairly unusual, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“The fact that there have been no trades feels like it’s the calm before the storm,” Schefter said on NFL Live on Thursday from Green Bay. “If we go back and look this century at every draft since 2000, we’ve averaged 5.5 trades per year. So it only stands to reason that before the night is through, even though we haven’t gotten any yet, we probably will be getting multiple trades at some point tonight. There are enough teams calling back.
“We heard early in the broadcast about the Cleveland Browns taking calls. We mentioned the Giants taking calls. We know that the Carolina Panthers have been taking calls about their pick, No. 8, and the Broncos have taken calls in both directions. So there are any number of teams that really would like to move back.”
Shortly after Schefter’s comments — the first domino fell. The Houston Texans and the Cleveland Browns were the first teams to agree to terms on a trade on draft night. However, none of the moves impacted the opening day.
The Texans traded their fifth-round pick (No. 166 overall), as well as its 2027 fifth-rounder for three picks from the Browns. Cleveland sent two sixth-round picks (179 and 216 overall), as well as a seventh-rounder (255 overall) to Houston in the deal.
Reports that multiple other teams are hoping their offers are heard and accepted before their respective selections have been widespread. But for now, that is the only example.
“By the time tonight finishes up, I would imagine that we’ll be somewhere close to if slightly less than the annual average number of trades in this particular draft,” Schefter said. Only time will tell, but we won’t have to wait long for all of those questions to be answered.
With just hours left until the start of the 2025 NFL Draft, time is running out for teams to make their moves. Reports indicate phone calls are being made, but it remains unclear if any of them will be followed through on.
The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is set for 8 p.m. ET with the Tennessee Titans making the first overall selection. The NFL’s annual event will air live on both ESPN and the NFL Network.
