After almost a year without a multiplex, the South Side is getting a new state-of-the-art complex at the Roosevelt Collections.

The latest: The AMC Roosevelt Collection 16 is opening Friday in the same space that was vacated by the ShowPlace Icon last summer.

  • It will be the 7th AMC theater location in Chicago.

The vibe: AMC promises all the “AMC amenities,” which means plush reclined seats, laser projection, ticketless entry and reserved seating assignments. There’s a bar, too.

  • It will also feature an IMAX screen, which will open later this summer.

Zoom out: The movie theater space is the anchor of the Roosevelt Collection Shops, which includes stores like H&M, The Container Store and Old Navy.

Flashback: Last summer, the ShowPlace Icon abruptly closed its doors as its parent company shuttered several theaters across the country.

  • The surprising move left a huge part of the South Side without a multiplex. The theater in Chatham also closed in 2024.

Between the lines: Leading up to the closure, the Roosevelt Collection Shops had various high-profile incidents ranging from teen takeovers to a shooting inside the theater.

Between the lines: Movie theaters have struggled since the pandemic. Box office numbers are slumping in 2025, but the industry is hopeful the movie-going experience will rebound this summer.
