In Another Simple Favor, Emily (Blake Lively) and Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) take their relationship to the next level. Kinda.
The film finds the two frenemies reunited in Capri for Emily’s wedding, in which Stephanie is her maid of honor. When Emily’s new husband, Dante (Michele Morrone), is shot and blown up in a shed of fireworks, Stephanie is named as the top suspect.
The next morning, Emily comes to her hotel room, where Stephanie is under house arrest. Emily is clad in full mourning black, including an extravagant veil. “I wanted someone who was mine and you took that from me, time and time again,” Emily tells Stephanie.
Then, she kisses Stephanie and stages a scene where it appears that Stephanie stabs her. When they kiss, Stephanie realizes this is not Emily — and we learn soon that it’s actually Charity, Emily’s third and unknown sister.
“Everybody was into it,” writer-director Paul Feig quips of the kiss between Stephanie and not-Emily. “Blake and Anna were so game for doing it.”

Throughout the first film, there was an odd sexual tension between the two women — and this moment briefly delivers on that. However, Feig says there’s an extra layer to consider. “Charity is so trying to live Emily’s life, but she was denied that sister,” he explains. “So, she’s discovering what she thinks is Emily’s life.”
“To her, she knows there was this relationship between Stephanie and Emily,” he continues. “She’s acting it out, trying to pretend to be Emily, and it just felt like a very natural thing to have her do that.”

That’s not even the weirdest make-out in the movie, however. That comes a few scenes later when Lively makes out with herself as Emily and Charity. “When I first told Blake about this new storyline, she was like, ‘Okay, I trust you. I’m not sure about it, but I will trust you,'” Feig recalls. “And she went for it.”
Lively previously addressed the plot twist at the movie’s SXSW premiere in March. “Right before we started shooting, [Paul] said, ‘I have a little bit of a curveball idea,'” she said. “It definitely upped the ante. It was very uncomfortable to watch in this theater with you guys.”
