Around the Empire: Yankees news – 4/28/25

New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: Jazz Chisholm Jr. appears to have won his appeal. The Yankee second baseman was suspended one game by MLB after tweeting mid-game after an ejection on April 17th. Under MLB rules, players can continue to appear in games while appealing suspensions, and sources disclose that Chisholm’s punishment has been dropped by MLB. Guess that means the umpires were wrong after all.

SNY | Alex Smith: Outside of Max Fried, there are a lot of questions surrounding the Yankee rotation, but there is hope on the horizon. Reigning AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is scheduled to start a throwing program this week, the biggest step forward yet in the righty’s recovery from a lat injury. He had been on a 10-day shutdown after an MRI, but the young fireballer is on the right track to eventually rejoin the team .

Future Stars Series | Mike Ashmore: Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz has seen both sides of the YankeesRed Sox rivalry, dealt from Boston to New York last winter in a small trade that sent away former catching prospect Carlos Narváez. The right-hander was “shocked” at the news, but has settled in well with the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades. A 21-year-old, Rodriguez-Cruz, tied the HV franchise record with 12 strikeouts in his last start, and has a 2.42 ERA in his first four this year.

New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: By now you’ve probably heard that Devin Williams is for now no longer the Yankee closer. The Airbender has not lived up to expectations in the first month of his time here, and Aaron Boone will likely go to Luke Weaver to close out games. Look for Williams in low-leverage spots for the time being.

Tangotiger Blog | Tom Tango: We close with a discussion of EV50, a core component of how we evaluate measurable changes in swing speed. There’s a whole bunch of batted balls that don’t really matter, and EV50 is a way of focusing on the ones that do.
