There are a lot of reasons, from necessity to preference, that someone might be considering a gluten free lifestyle. In fact, that could be a blog post all on its own, so I’m not going to get into all of those reasons right here. What I am going to share is a tasty (and easy) recipe for gluten free red licorice!

Now, you may be wondering is licorice gluten free? As in, is there gluten free licorice at the store. Yes, you can find gluten free licorice candy, BUT it won’t be the standard Twizzlers, which use wheat as an ingredient. Instead, you’re probably going to need to hit up a health food or all natural grocer and be prepared to pay up.

So, instead of asking “where can I buy gluten free licorice,” maybe you should be asking how to make gluten free licorice. And the answer to that is this article!

This gluten free red licorice recipe is a great snack whether you need a 3 o’clock pick-me-up or are having an at-home movie night. If you’re feeling rebellious you could even sneak this gluten free red licorice into the theater so you have a healthy snack option. Shhh… I won’t tell if you won’t. 😉

Oh, and don’t be nervous about sharing this gluten free red licorice candy with your non-gluten free friends. It tastes so good most of them won’t even think to ask is this licorice gluten free?

Gluten Free Licorice Candy Ingredients

1/2 cup gluten free flour with xanthan gum
Pinch of kosher salt
1 teaspoon Lorann cherryor strawberry flavoring
Red food coloring
1 stick of butter
8 tablespoons light corn syrup
4 tablespoons liquid sugar in the raw
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

You will also need:
Mixing bowl
Heavy duty sauce pan
Pizza cutter
Parchment paper
Mixing spoon
Candy thermometer
9″ x9″ cake pan

Gluten Free Licorice Candy Directions

1. In a large mixing bowl combine salt and flour and mix well.

2. In a large heavy duty sauce pan combine sweetened condensed milk, sugar in the raw, corn syrup, butter, and sugar.

3. Over medium heat, bring pan’s contents to a boil, and cook until the temperature reaches 240 degrees.

Tip: Use a candy thermometer to check the temperature of your gluten free licorice.

4. Immediately remove pan from heat, and carefully pour contents over flour mix.

5. Mix well.

6. Add in flavoring of choice and red food coloring (to create gluten free red licorice), and mix well.

7. Pour mixture into greased pan.

8. Set pan in the fridge for about 45 minutes or until chilled.

9. Remove gluten free licorice candy from the pan and place on parchment paper.

10. Cut off the sides with a pizza cutter to make an even square.

11. Cut gluten free licorice square into 20 long pieces.

Optional: For gluten free licorice bites, cut each long piece into many small pieces.

12. Twist each piece carefully and place on parchment paper.
