What happens if I take more than one dose of Claritin®? Taking more than the recommended dose of Claritin® may cause drowsiness. You may only need to take loratadine on a day when you have symptoms, for instance if you've been exposed to a trigger such as animal hair. Or you may need to take it regularly to prevent symptoms, such as hay fever during spring and summer. Try to take loratadine at about the same time every day.

No, with loratadine tablets, you should not take a 5-milligram (mg) or 20-mg dose. The maximum recommended dosage of loratadine is 10 mg in 24 hours. Taking a higher dose of loratadine, such as 20 mg, may cause an antihistamine overdose or increase your risk of side effects.

Some of the most serious side effects of loratadine require daily use over weeks and months to become a problem. Though rare, delayed side effects include seizures, liver problems, blood clotting problems, constipation, and weight gain.

If a healthy adult takes only a slightly higher dose of antihistamine, such as accidentally taking two pills instead of one, their symptoms may not be serious, or they may not have any symptoms. However, a larger overdose, especially in children or older adults, may cause serious symptoms.
