EAST MEAD TWP - Carole N. Humes, 90, journeyed home peacefully into the arms of Jesus on the evening of July 27, 2024 with her son John and his wife Brenda at her side. She was born on September 4, 1933 in Meadville, PA to Roy E & Margaret G Urquhart Kindervater. Having grown up on a farm in Guys Mills, PA, she often said she was her “Daddy’s son”, as he knew he could count on her to milk the cows and help around the farm.
A graduate of Randolph East Mead High School, she went on to attend Michael's Beauty Academy and became the Owner and Managing Cosmetologist at Carole's Beauty Salon located in Guys Mills, PA until the early 1950’s. By the 1960’s and early 70’s, she had a bakery in the basem*nt of our house in which she specialized making wedding cakes. (Her homemade pizzas were a favorite at our house back then. Friends were always especially happy they dropped by on those days just so they could join us for dinner!) She later became the Office Manager/Receptionist for Dr Fermin T Yu, MD until her retirement in 1993.
She was a member of the Parkman Road First Church of God in Warren, Ohio from the early 1960’s until 2003 when our parents moved back to Mom’s hometown of Meadville, PA. Mom and Dad then became members at New Beginnings Church of God in Meadville where they volunteered as greeters, folding church bulletins, and doing whatever they could do to help as long as their health allowed. Mom continued to attend church services online up until the time of her passing.
Mom enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafts, gardening, and camping. She took pride in volunteering at church to do whatever needed done behind the scenes. She and our Daddy were inseparable. They loved to sing and dance together. In fact, the place they met was at a dance, and after a whirlwind of a courtship, they married several weeks later on July 2, 1955. A couple of short years later they began a family, bringing us four kids into the world: Mark, Cheryl, Sharleen, and John.
Our Mom was the female version of a Jack-of-all-trades. There wasn't much that she couldn't do when she set her mind to something. Mom was a giver who wasn't afraid to reach out to someone in need. She truly enjoyed holidays and the traditions which she carried on throughout the years made things very special for us kids while we were growing up. Life wasn't always easy for mom as she struggled with many physical issues over the years, including losing her eyes. She was one of the strongest women us kids have ever known. She was like the Energizer Bunny who never gave up; she always seemed to bounce back and wasn't afraid to give God the glory for healing her and bringing her through really tough times. Her faith in God was an inspiration to many and she often shared her story with those willing to listen. Her hope was that they, too, would want to come to know God’s saving grace and have a personal relationship with Him.
Our Mom is sadly missed by us - her daughter Sharleen (William) Johnson of Cross Creek, PA, and son John (Brenda) Humes of Meadville, who survive. She is also survived by her late daughter Cheryl’s husband Jeff Taylor of Fenelton, PA, ten grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, as well as six step-grandchildren, and sisters Margaret E Kindervater, Eleanor Anwer, and Emilie Johnston.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Richard “Mike” Humes, daughter Cheryl Taylor, son Mark Humes, great-granddaughter Cheryl Lynn Baker. She is also preceded in death by siblings, Jack, Marilyn, Richard and Edward Kindervater, and Lois (Kindervater) Briggs.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 11:00 AM at New Beginnings Church of God located at 13226 Leslie Road, Meadville, PA 16335. A luncheon will take place immediately after the service.
Special thanks to “JR” from Senior Helpers for the loving care she provided for our Mom during the week and on occasion weekends these past few months which helped make it possible for Mom to stay at home with family, and also to the nursing staff at Hospice of Crawford County who took the best of care of both of our parents during each of their last days. We love and greatly appreciate each and every one of you. ~ Sharleen, John & Brenda
