The murder trial of 48-year-old Walter Alexander began Wednesday. The trial stems from the killing of 37-year-old Brittany Alexander on Aug. 26, 2023, at a home at 735 Madison St. in Papillion. Papillion police said Brittany Alexander was shot.

During opening arguments, a Sarpy County prosecutor said the evidence pointed to Walter Alexander having killed his wife. The prosecutor, Deputy Sarpy County Attorney Ben Perlman, alleged Walter was standing with a gun at close range to Brittany Alexander when she was shot.

Police later arrested Walter Alexander around 84th and Harrison Streets after he was reportedly seen leaving the area of the residence in a Mercedes-Benz sedan. Perlman said Alexander did not shed a tear over his wife’s killing when informed and questioned by police and he did not wonder about the nature of her death.

One of Walter Alexander’s attorneys, Deputy Public Defender Joe Fabian, asked jurors to keep their minds open as to reasonable doubt. He added the prosecution was not telling the whole story of what happened that night. Fabian likened the prosecution’s opening argument to a preview trailer.

“A preview, like anyone who’s been to the movies will know, doesn’t always tell the whole story,” he said. “Don’t make up your mind until you’ve heard all the evidence and all the testimony.”

Fabian said the evidence presents reasonable doubt of Walter Alexander’s guilt.

“After you’ve heard all the evidence, we are confident you will find there is reasonable doubt in this case,” he said.

The trial is scheduled to last until the middle of next week.
