How effective are wireless dog fences? ›

Many people think an invisible underground wireless electric fence is the best way to keep their dog in their yard. However, they are simply not as effective as you might think. Statistics suggest that invisible wireless electric fences are only about 70% effective.

With our multi-patented custom-shape wireless dog fence, you can create and edit a boundary of virtually any shape and size in seconds using the connected mobile app.

The system works by transmitting a radio signal up to 90 feet in all directions. You temporarily define the Pet Area with Boundary Flags for a visual aid in training your pet. Your pet wears a Receiver Collar with Contact Points that touch his neck, and, once trained, is allowed to roam freely in the Pet Area.

There are 3 possible alarms that can happen when the transmitter is turned on. The first is for metal interference with anything metal or appliances within 5 feet of the transmitter. The second alarm is to signal power loss to the transmitter.

Wireless Dog Fence System

Signal interference can be a concern when there are physical obstacles, like trees, changes in terrain, buildings, etc.

Most systems recommend that you bury the wires 1 inch to 3 inches underground. The wires don't have to be underground to work, but if they're aboveground, it's easy to trip over them or to cut them with a lawnmower or trimmer. Test your wires aboveground before burying them.

Fortunately, most dogs remember their initial training and respect the perimeter even when the fence is not electrified. Escape. Although invisible fences protect dogs by preventing them from leaving the yard, they do not prevent hazards from entering the yard. Stray dogs and wild animals can still access the yard and interact aggressively with pet dogs.

The distance you determine can be adjusted on the indoor transmitter. Some systems will work up to 30 feet from the boundary and as close as a foot. Just make sure that your dog has room to roam and play without feeling discomfort.

And if pet parents don't realize the fence is no longer functioning, the dog can walk right through the boundary. Dogs are smart, and some even grow wise to the way the collar works and patrol near the boundary, setting off the warning tone to tax the battery until it wears out.
