The ATP Madrid Open has featured plenty of entertaining tennis so far and the exciting action should continue on day five with eight matches on the slate in the Spanish capital. As ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match, including Alexander Zverev vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. But who will book their spot in the round of 16?
ATP Madrid Day 5 Predictions
Jakub Mensik vs Ben Shelton
Head-to-head: Mensik 1-1 Shelton
This is going to be a highly interesting match with both young players in form in 2025. Jakub Mensik enjoyed the best fortnight of his career to date by winning the title Miami and while he did bow in the first round last week in Munich, the Czech is still going to be very dangerous on the clay courts. Ben Shelton did have a good week in Munich reaching the finals. Both players serve big and it will come down to who can hold their own from the baseline. Expect Mensik to be that player on this occasion.
Prediction: Mensik in 3
Alexander Bublik vs Andrey Rublev
Head-to-head: Rublev 5-2 Bublik
These two are no strangers to each other having played each other seven times but they’ve never met each other on the clay courts. Alexander Bublik hasn’t had any momentum in 2025 and it will be a very tough matchup for him against Andrey Rublev. The Russian enjoyed a walkover in his first round and he will no doubt be raring to go. Bublik may play with a lot of variety but Rublev still possesses the power to hit through him even on the clay courts.
Prediction: Rublev in 2
Benjamin Bonzi vs Taylor Fritz
Head-to-head: first meeting
Benjamin Bonzi scored a fantastic win over seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz in his second round match and the Frenchman should enter this match with high hopes. He faces Taylor Fritz who is playing his first tournament after Miami and the American did look good in his first round. Expect Fritz to look to dictate terms from the baseline, but he may drop a set on the way even he is a heavy favourite to advance.
Prediction: Fritz in 3
Daniil Medvedev vs Juan Manuel Cerundolo
Head-to-head: first meeting
You never know what to expect from Daniil Medvedev on the clay courts but one thing is for sure that he is the fresher compared to his opponent. Juan Manuel Cerundolo has already played four matches including qualifying rounds this week and he will no doubt be fatigued. Medvedev has been pretty vocal about his views on clay courts but he would no doubt love have a good week here. Expect Medvedev to put up superior quality tennis from the baseline and progress ahead.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3
