BNP Paribas Open: Mirra Andreeva looks dominant in decisive win over Elena Rybakina

She may be only 17 years old, but at Indian Wells Mirra Andreeva is looking like the next superstar in women’s tennis.

On Tuesday, Andreeva, the ninth seed in the draw, rolled without much trouble against seventh-seeded Elena Rybakina, the 2023 BNP Paribas Open champion.

The 6-1, 6-2 win inside Stadium 2 of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden was dominant. The match lasted just 64 minutes, outside of the delays.

The win makes Andreeva the youngest player to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals since Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who was also 17, in 2009.

Not even rain delays could derail the Russian tennis star and the momentum she generated early in the match, before play was paused. She was actually even more dominant after returning from the delays, winning four consecutive games to take the first set.

Mirra Andreeva defeats Clara Tauson on Stadium 1 at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Andreeva, who won’t be 18 until April 29, will now face Elina Svitolina in the Indian Wells quarterfinals on Thursday.

Andreeva has won nine consecutive matches, going back to the title she won last month in Dubai. She is the youngest to win nine consecutive WTA 1000 matches since the format’s introduction.

She’s 16-3 this season, with two of those losses coming against top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka.

By winning the Dubai title last month, Andreeva became the youngest WTA 1000 champion in the format’s history, which moved her into the top 10 for the first time in her career.
