‘Borderlands 4’ Just Moved Its Release Date, Raising ‘GTA 6’ Questions

GTA 6/Borderlands 4

Take Two

Take-Two has no qualms with messing with the entire industry as everyone sits around and waits for a GTA 6 release date. Now, what was considered a “safe” spot to launch, somewhere around the release of Take-Two’s Borderlands 4 on September 23, perhaps isn’t.

Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford just announced in a now-deleted, soon-to-be reposted video that the new Borderlands 4 release date is now almost two weeks earlier on September 12, 2025. The tweet said they “have” to move it, and obviously this now raises questions about the pending release date of GTA 6, which is looking more and more likely to hit its fall 2025 release date, almost certainly in October or November.

This is good news for some games, worrying now for others. Bungie’s Marathon was set to launch the same day on September 23, which seemed not ideal. I’ve heard that the date was picked because there were internal rumblings that Borderlands 4 would in fact be moved, and here we are, it actually happened.

However, other games may now be biting their nails a bit. PlayStation’s Ghost of Yotei just announced an October 2 release date, which still seemed close enough to Borderlands 4 to be safe. But if Borderlands “has” to move that date in late September, it seems increasingly likely GTA 6 may arrive in October, if not mid-October, and Yotei might be in the fallout zone. Many other big games (Call of Duty, for one) have refused to announce dates and may not until GTA 6 finally pulls the trigger on an announcement.

If Borderlands is announcing this now, I don’t think it’s necessarily the case that GTA 6 is imminently about to release a second trailer and a subsequent release date. I mean, maybe, but again, they don’t care about any other games, much less timing something to go alongside a Borderlands 4 announcement.

Personally, I’m quite happy about this. I was planning to play both a lot of Borderlands 4 and Marathon, so almost two weeks with BL4 means I won’t have to make a tough choice even if yes, I’ll probably put a few hundred hours into BL4 eventually as I’ve done with all the past games. Then Yotei, then when GTA 6 arrives, a lightswitch gets flipped and that’s essentially the only thing that exists. This move by Borderlands does seem like a harbinger of things to come.
