WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY)
John Carpenter who was born in Carthage, and raised in Kentucky was honored with a star on the walk of fame on Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles. I watched the live feed coverage yesterday, April 3. Several of Carpenter’s friends who were also co-workers on his films made an appearance and spoke on his behalf. Kurt Russell, star of one of Carpenter’s best films, The Thing (1982).
Carpenter launched one of the most successful horror film franchises when he directed Halloween, which was released in 1978. Halloween for many years was considered the most successful independent film ever made, when comparing budget to box office gross. Shot on a shoe-string budget in a neighborhood in the San Fernando valley doubling for autumnal Illionois, Halloween is still considered one of the greatest horror films ever made, sparking dozens of derivate films and launching the subgenre “slasher” films. Crew members literally carried bags of leaves from scene to scene, spreading them on lawns. if you look closely, you can spot a palm tree trunk in a tracking shot. I would know, because I have seen the original Halloween dozens of times.
