The Padres revealed bad news before the game when Jackson Merrill was placed on the IL, and things went from bad to worse from there. The Padres jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Dylan Cease was unable to protect the lead. The Athletics responded with 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st, and never relinquished the lead. When all was said and done, they tagged Cease for 9 earned runs in 4 innings. To make matters worse, both Jake Cronenworth and Fernando Tatis Jr. exited the game early with apparent injuries.
