Unicorns are arguably one of the most popular mythical creatures even today, so it just makes sense that there’s a day dedicated to them. Every year on April 9th we celebrate everything unicorn. Why this specific date? My research did not reveal an answer to that one; perhaps it will remain another one of life’s mysteries.
This isn’t this first column I’ve written about a mythical creature, and I doubt it will be the last what with days dedicated to dragons and fairies still waiting to be featured. And who knows what other lore I’ll stumble across in my readings? But circling back to unicorns, there are legends of a horse-like animal with a single, large, spiraled horn protruding from the forehead in many cultures. Early Mesopotamian artwork depicts them; India, Greece, and China all told tales of creatures bearing a similar description. The, now common, depiction of a white horse with a spiral horn on its forehead was described by Celts, Romans, and Persians. And the unicorn has represented Scotland on their coat of arms since the 12th century.
A group of unicorns is called a “blessing”, which makes sense with their association with purity, innocence, and good luck. And according to a number of sources, unicorns are purported to be communal animals, living in groups of four or five. Unicorns are also, as previously mentioned, usually portrayed as being white, though other sources say they can be black as well. Despite this very narrow color range, they are also associated with rainbows, or rainbow colors. Unicorns’ popularity is such that they are featured in children’s fiction and adult fiction alike, they’re in movies and television shows, they are still depicted in art of all sorts, and even have cookbooks solely containing a unicorn theme.
This April 9th, celebrate unicorns by wearing rainbow colors, eating rainbow food, or in whatever way suits your fancy.
