Champions League LIVE: Madrid derby heading to extra time, Villa and Arsenal ease through

Last week saw the Round of 16 kick off in the UEFA Champions League and there are plenty of tense ties heading into the second legs this week. This is your place to follow all the drama across Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Listen live to the Champions League now.

Wednesday, March 12th

22:55 CET – We are heading to extra time in Madrid! Atletico took the lead in the very first minute courtesy of Conor Gallagher, levelling the tie at 2-2. Real‘s Vinicius Junior then smashed a penalty over the bar in the second half, so the teams just haven’t been able to be separated.

Follow extra time here.

22:53 CET – A rotated Arsenal side have drawn 2-2 with PSV in their second leg, but the damage was done in the first leg, with the Gunners smashing their opponents 7-1. They will face either Real or Atletico Madrid in the quarters.

22:51 CET – Aston Villa have cruised through to the quarter-finals in emphatic fashion, thumping Brugge 3-0 on the night and 6-1 on aggregate. The impressive PSG await.

22:33 CET – Not that it matters too much, but PSV have levelled the match to 2-2 against Arsenal, but of course, are still trailing 9-3 on aggregate.

22:29 CET – Would you believe it?! Vinicius Junior has skied a penalty over the bar for Real! What a chance missed for them to take the lead in the tie!

22:23 CET – Real Madrid are really struggling to break down Atletico, with their three shots in the first 45 minutes their fewest attempted in the first half of a UEFA Champions League game this season.

22:21 CET – It is now 3-0 to Villa with Asensio scoring yet again from the bench. It’s dreamland for Unai Emery’s men, with PSG waiting in the quarters.

22:16 CET – Ian Maatsen has quickly doubled Villa‘s lead, and they are now cruising into the quarter-finals.

22:11 CET – Aston Villa are surely into the Champions League quarter-finals now, with Marco Asensio continuing his fine form for the Premier League side, scoring off the bench to put his side 1-0 up against Brugge and leading 4-1 on aggregate.

22:04 CET – And we are back out for the second half! What a 45 minutes we have in store.

21:47 CET – After Conor Gallagher‘s goal after 27 seconds, Atletico Madrid have put in the perfect counter-attacking performance to lead Real Madrid 1-0 at the break. It’s all square in the tie, though, as the Madrid derby continues to simmer.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa and Club Brugge are goalless at the interval and Arsenal lead PSV 2-1 on the night and an eye-watering 9-2 on aggregate.

21:38 CET – Meanwhile, at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal have restored their lead in the second leg over PSV. Declan Rice gets his name on the scoresheet after good work from Raheem Sterling, who has both assists tonight.

21:36 CET – Atletico, even with less of the ball, look the more threatening side as Antoine Griezmann has his dangerous cross parried away by Thibault Courtois. Just 10 minutes left of this breathless first half.

21:26 CET – Strong save from Thibault Courtois. Julian Alvarez gets a vicious shot away for Atletico Madrid, but the Belgian goalkeeper is level to it. Chances are at a premium for both sides. Real Madrid have registered just one shot in anger so far.

21:19 CET – The comeback is on for PSV! Maybe not, but they have levelled the game against Arsenal on the night through former Tottenham Hotspur man Ivan Perisic – that will be a sweet moment for him.

Meanwhile, Club Brugge are down to 10 men against Aston Villa after young Belgian defender Kyriani Sabbe was given a straight red for fouling Marcus Rashford as the forward bared down on goal. They need two goals to get back into the tie at Villa Park – that task has just got a lot harder.

21:14 CET – Tackles flying in, even on Carlo Ancelotti, and tempers flaring early, it’s peak Madrid derby! Real Madrid are in control of the ball, but that low block so synonymous with Atletico Madrid is stifling them so far. Remember, as it stands, we will have extra time and potentially penalties.

21:07 CET – Arsenal have continued where they left off against PSV, with Oleksandr Zinchenko taking the lead in the sixth minute for the Gunners – it’s now 8-1 on aggregate.

21:01 CET – We have lift-off in the Wanda Metropolitano. Almost from kick-off, Atletico Madrid get down the right wing and Conor Gallagher gives the hosts the lead with a tap-in after arriving late. They are level in the tie against Real Madrid!

It was so quick in fact, that it was the earliest ever goal by an English player in a UEFA Champions League game (27 seconds), and the earliest Atletico Madrid have ever scored in the competition also – stat courtesy of Opta.

21:00 CET – The noise levels in the Wanda Metropolitano are incredible as kick off the second leg of the round of 16 tie between old rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

This will be our focus tonight, but we will bring you updates from the other two games. Remember to click on the link in the second paragraph of this page to listen live.

20:37 CET – Borussia Dortmund qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals after a 3-2 aggregate win over Lille. A cracking game that was, in the end, decided by Maxi Beier’s second-half strike.

20:33 CET – Into stoppage time – we will play four more minutes…

20:27 CET – Lille are banging on the door now, but Dortmund won’t budge. This time, Chuba Akpom has a free header at the back-post, but he is unable to generate any power as it is claimed by the keeper.

20:22 CET – Huge chance for Jonathan David, who has a free volley from near the six-yard box, but the Canadian forward can only fire it straight at Gregor Kobel. Just 10 minutes left for Lille to find that crucial equaliser or they are out.

20:18 CET – It’s heating up in the final stages between Lille and Dortmund, with the hosts pushing for a leveller. The same goes for the Spanish capital…

Follow that game with us here.

20:10 CET – Back to Stade Pierre-Mauroy, where Borussia Dortmund lead in the tie against Lille! A stunning finish into the top corner from Maximilian Beier has given the visitors a 3-2 aggregate lead with 25 minutes to play. What a turnaround from the Bundesliga side.

20:05 CET – Aston Villa have already got one foot in the quarter-finals as they look to replicate their European Cup winning run from 1982 after a 3-1 first-leg victory last week, but Club Brugge have already produced some great displays during the knockout rounds in knocking out Atalanta, so the Villains will need to wary of a comeback tonight.

They have also received a huge boost with the inclusion of Emiliano Martinez in goal for tonight’s game. Follow the action from Villa Park with us from 21:00 CET.

Aston Villa – Club Brugge lineupsFlashscore

19:56 CET – Dortmund are level! After Serhou Guirassy was fouled with a push in the back, Emre Can steps up to slot home the penalty and tie both the game on the night and on aggregate. Game on in Lille!

19:54 CET – The one tie tonight that seems beyond doubt is the game between Arsenal and PSV. The Gunners won the first leg 7-1, meaning it would require a major miracle for the Dutch side to turn that around.

With that in mind, there is some rotation for Mikel Arteta’s side, but not as much as some were expecting.

Arsenal – PSV lineupsFlashscore

19:49 CET – Back underway in Lille, with the hosts going through to the quarter-finals thanks to that first-half goal against Borussia Dortmund.

But, the lineups are coming in for the three 21:00 CET games, and the headline act is, of course, the Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

The big news is that despite missing training yesterday, Kylian Mbappe starts for Los Blancos as they hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg.

Atletico Madrid – Real Madrid lineupsFlashscore

19:34 CET – Half-time in Lille and it’s the hosts who lead 1-0 on the night (2-1 on aggregate) thanks to Jonathan David‘s fifth-minute strike and a string of superb saves from Lucas Chevalier in goal.

Follow the second half with Flashscore here.

First half statsOpta by StatsPerform

19:08 CET – It’s been a thrilling opening 20 minutes, with Dortmund responding well to the early setback.

Pascal Gross, Julian Ryerson and Serhou Guirassy have all gone close to a leveller but Lucas Chevalier has come to the hosts’ rescue, producing a number of impressive saves as well as standing firm in a crazy goalmouth scramble.

18:52 CET – A dream start for Lille as Jonathan David fires them ahead inside five minutes!

Ismaily was the architect of the goal, marauding down the left wing before cutting the ball back to David, whose low effort took a small deflection to roll between the legs of Gregor Kobel.

18:45 CET – We’re now underway in France for the second leg between Lille and Borussia Dortmund. Stay tuned for all the latest updates!

18:36 CET – Julian Brandt is making his 50th Champions League appearance for Dortmund tonight, with only Marco Reus (72), Mats Hummels (66) and Lukasz Piszczek (54) making more for them in the competition.

Brandt’s recent statsFlashscore

18:08 CET – As for Niko Kovac’s Dortmund, they’ll be desperate to put their domestic struggles to one side in an attempt to emulate last season’s brilliant run to the Champions League showpiece.

Read our analysis on Die Borussen and the numbers behind their hopes of progression.

17:52 CET – We’re just under an hour away from the first game of the evening between Lille and Borussia Dortmund at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Bruno Genesio’s side earned an excellent 1-1 away draw in Germany last week, giving them every chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier competition for the first time.

17:35 CET – Good evening and welcome back to our Football Tracker as we look ahead to the remaining four Champions League last-16 ties!

There is plenty in store tonight, with several finely-poised matches and the quarter-final lineup to be decided.

Here’s the schedule and the current scores:

Lille vs Borussia Dortmund (1-1) 18:45 CET

Arsenal vs PSV Eindhoven (7-1) 21:00 CET

Aston Villa vs Club Brugge (3-1) 21:00 CET

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid (1-2) 21:00 CET

Tuesday, March 11th

23:55 CET – That’s all for today’s drama in Europe, we now know half of the quarter-finalists in the Champions League – PSG, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Inter – the latter two of which will face each other next.

Tune in again tomorrow to find out who else will join those four in the next round!

23:43 CET – PSG have won the penalty shootout over Liverpool thanks to saves by Gianluigi Donnarumma against Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones! All four of PSG’s takers scored, winning the shoutout 4-1.

The French champions will next face either Club Brugge or Aston Villa in the final eight. If we’ve learned anything from this tie over both legs, it’s that PSG have the tools to go very, very deep in this tournament.

23:33 CET – That’s the end of extra time at Anfield and we will need penalties to see who of Liverpool and PSG are progressing to the quarter-finals to face either Club Brugge or Aston Villa.

It was a pretty even match (and tie), similar possession and shots but the Parisians have edged the xG stats 2.56-1.64 tonight.

You’d have to say, whoever goes on to lose on penalties will be very unfortunate to be knocked out as these are two of the very best sides in Europe.

Key match statsOpta by StatsPerform

23:23 CET – Less than 10 minutes to go now, this is surely getting agonising for both sets of fans…

23:14 CET – As extra time comes to its midway pause, there hasn’t been too much to write home about yet. Unfortunately, this match feels like it’s heading to penalties but there are still 15 minutes for someone to change that!

PSG have won three of their last four penalty shootouts across all competitions while Liverpool have won each of their last four.

23:08 CET – Fun fact via Opta: PSG‘s only previous Champions League tie that went to extra-time came exactly 10 years ago, in the 2014/15 Round of 16, away to Chelsea (they progressed on away goals).

22:58 CET – The first extra-time period is now underway at Anfield – follow the drama live here!

22:53 CET – Liverpool and PSG are heading to extra time. Ousmane Dembele’s strike drew the tie level at 1-1 and they couldn’t be separated since then… Bring on the extra 30!

22:52 CET – Inter have gotten the job done at home, easing past Feyenoord 2-1 and 4-1 in the tie. Next up for Simone Inzaghi’s men is Vincent Kompany’s Bayern! Some match-up that’s going to be.

Key match statsOpta by StatsPerform

22:50 CET – Bayern Munich have beaten Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 to crush them 5-0 overall in the tie and progress to the quarter-finals where they will face Inter, who have all but won their tie as well now.

Key match statsOpta by StatsPerform

22:38 CET – Entering the final 10 minutes of regular time, it’s safe to say, Bayern and Inter are all but through to the quarter-finals. It’s all eyes on Anfield then and that one looks destined for extra time.

If anyone’s winning it, it looks like Liverpool now as PSG have managed just one shot and two touches in Liverpool’s box in the second half.

22:28 CET – Alphonso Davies has scored to put Bayern into a 5-0 aggregate lead over Bayer. That’s sorry reading for Leverkusen fans who would’ve gone into this tie with high hopes but Xabi Alonso’s men have wilted.

22:27 CET – After 70 minutes, the ball possession stats between Liverpool and PSG stand at exactly 50:50!

22:20 CET – As it stands, Bayern and Inter look set to join Barcelona in the final eight. Over at Anfield, it’s all to play for between Liverpool and PSG and it’s some game too, breathless!

22:09 CET – The first goal of the second half has come at Bayern, Harry Kane scoring to put that tie very much to bed. Bayern now lead Bayer 4-0 on aggregate.

And just like that, Inter have scored as well! Hakan Calhanoglu converting from the spot to make it 2-1 on the night and 4-1 in that tie – game over for Feyenoord as well, you’d think.

Calhanoglu’s penalty historyOpta by StatsPerform

22:03 CET – We are back underway around the grounds! Who’s going to be the heroes? 45 minutes to find out.

21:47 CET – We have reached the break in our three last 16 times, and the only game really in the balance, Liverpool vs PSG, is level at 1-1 in the tie after Ousmane Dembele’s opener.

Liverpool – PSG match statsOpta by StatsPerform

Liverpool have faced 3.75 expected goals against (xGA) versus PSG in this knockout tie, the highest figure of any opponent they have faced this season in all competitions (Bournemouth – 2.67 next most).

Meanwhile, Feyenoord have a slither of hope against Inter after their late first-half leveller, but they are still 3-1 down in the tie heading into the final 45.

Finally, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen go into the break goalless, with both sides unable to carve out many opportunities in the first half. Leverkusen will need at least three goals in the second half if they are to stay in the competition.

21:41 CET – Do we have life for Feyenoord? They have one back as Jakub Moder converts a penalty to reduce the arrears to two against Inter at the San Siro.

21:38 CET – A forced change for Bayer Leverkusen, as Mario Hermoso has been withdrawn after injuring his shoulder in a tangle with Harry Kane – he is replaced by Robert Andrich.

21:34 CET – PSG are continuing to create chances against Liverpool, racking up an xG of 1.79 in the first half so far.

Can they find a second?

21:26 CET – Our only goalless game is the all-German clash at the BayArena, where Bayer Leverkusen are creating some pressure. Bayern, though, are weathering it well and look a threat on the counter.

Tempers seem to be flaring early too, certainly one to keep an eye on.

21:18 CET – PSG are once again causing Liverpool problems like last week as Bradley Barcola forces a good save out of Alisson. Safe to say that the scoring isn’t done at Anfield tonight.

21:12 CET – PSG silence Anfield! Their man of the year, Ousmane Dembele, opens the scoring on Merseyside to level the tie at 1-1 against Liverpool

Dembele has now scored his seventh goal in the 2024/2025 UEFA Champions League, netting for the first time since 11th February 2025 against Brest.

21:08 CET – Inter lead Feyenoord after eight minutes through Marcus Thuram. The Frenchman picks his spot from the edge of the box to give the Italian side a 3-0 aggregate lead in the last 16 tie. A mountain to climb now for the Dutch club.

21:05 CET – Early chance and shout for a penalty for Bayern Munich as Harry Kane goes down in the box whilst taking a shot. The referee waves it away, and Lukas Hradecky makes the save. Bayer Leverkusen will need to defend better than that if they are to overturn their three-goal deficit.

20:52 CET – A comeback in Leverkusen? A thriller at Anfield? What do the 21:00 CET kick-offs have in store for us in the Champions League?

Let’s find out!

20:38 CET – That’s all she wrote in Catalonia and Barcelona are through to the quarter-finals having beaten Benfica 3-1 on the night, 4-1 in the tie.

Key match statsOpta by StatsPerform

The stars of the show this evening were Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, both scoring and both showing once again why they are among the best in the business. Barcelona will next face Dortmund or Lille in the final eight.

20:20 CET – Here’s a good stat courtesy of Opta: Bayern Munich will be looking to qualify for the quarter-finals of the European Cup/Champions League for the 35th time, with only Real Madrid having done so on more occasions.

And with a 3-0 lead over Bayer, you wouldn’t want to bet against them this evening.

20:12 CET – Frenkie de Jong has missed a massive chance to make it 4-1 to Barcelona, not that they need the extra goal.

20:07 CET – After an hour’s play, Barca have dominated their match against Benfica, leading 3-1 and having 66 per cent of the ball. Here’s where they have been attacking:

19:53 CET – We are back underway in Barcelona with the Catalans leading Benfica 3-1.

19:50 CET – Looking ahead to the late games, it feels like Liverpool vs PSG is the only one that could go either way, with the score at 1-0 to the English giants, but you never know!

Bayer have to overturn a 3-0 deficit at home against Bayern while Feyenoord are 2-0 down and away to Inter. See how the sides will line up across the fixtures below:

19:32 CET – It’s three! Raphinha has bagged his 11th goal in 10 Champions League matches to put Barcelona 3-1 up at the break. What a season the Brazilian is having.

Never say never, but with it now 4-1 with just 45 minutes to go, this tie feels done.

The first-half statsOpta by StatsPerform

19:14 CET – Not to state the blindingly obvious, but Lamine Yamal is some player! The 17-year-old has restored his side’s lead with an absolute beauty, thinking past a defender and curling the ball into the far corner from just outside the box.

Yamal has scored a stunnerJosep LAGO / AFP / Opta by StatsPerform

18:58 CET – What a start this has been! Raphinha gave Barcelona the lead after 11 minutes following some lovely play from Lamine Yamal, but Benfica have responded almost immediately through Nicolas Otamendi, who has headed in a corner.

With that goal, Otamendi (37y 27d) is the third oldest scorer in the knockout stages of the Champions League behind Ryan Giggs (37y 148d) and Edin Dzeko (37y 54d).

18:40 CET – Here we go then – the first second leg of this year’s round of 16 is about to get underway.

You’d think that reaching the quarter-finals is par for the course for Barcelona, but last year was the first time they’d done so since 2020; Benfica on the other hand have made it to the last eight in two of the last three seasons.

Who will do so this year? Follow every kick of the clash here.

17:55 CET – Below you can see how the sides will line up for the first match of the evening between Barcelona and Benfica.

Remember, the visitors from Lisbon need to overturn a 1-0 deficit. It sounds like a tall order but our football features writer Jason Pettigrove has mapped out how they might do so here.
