ChatGPT has gone down, with thousands of users across the globe experiencing issues. The AI chatbot, developed by OpenAI, engages in human-like conversations and generates a wide range of text-based content.
Problems began rolling in shortly before 3pm on Tuesday, April 22, according to Downdetector, which monitors service outages. Reports grew into the hundreds and then thousands as of shortly before 4.30pm.
The overwhelming majority of difficulties pertain to ChatGPT at a whopping 99 per cent. A live outage service map, which shows where most of the reports are coming from, shows a lot of activity in the Edinburgh area.
Indeed, Scotland seems to be suffering alongside many other countries across the world including Italy and Morocco who may be trying to use ChatGPT for brainstorming, essay writing, translations, or image generation.
Many took to X, previously Twitter, to rage about the trouble they have ran into.
One user wrote: “Is it only me or chatgpt is down now ???”
Another penned: “Yes, ‘error in message stream’, no responses being generated.”
A third fumed: “What happened with chatgpt? Bro why down?”
A fourth concluded: “Chatgpt seems to be down right now. significant outage
A fifth added: “I was working in a project about computer quantum mechanics and it stopped,” while a sixth said: “Yes, I was mid research and it came up with the dreaded orange error message.”
ChatGPT and OpenAI have separate X accounts but neither have responded to reports of errors.
It comes after the chatbox experienced a major outage back in February, which was apparently the second of its kind, leaving users angry over its reported inconsistency and unreliability in 2025 so far.
The chatbot went down on Wednesday, February 5, temporarily leaving thousands unable to access the system. More than 20,000 users reported issues with ChatGPT, marking a widespread disruption across multiple countries.
According to Downdetector, complaints surged to nearly 500 around 4.30am on Thursday, February 6 in the UK as users fought to log in or receive any response from the AI.
Regular users, businesses and developers were affected. The majority of the shutdown seemed to have taken place in England, however there was some light activity regarding problems witnessed in the Glasgow area.
OpenAI acknowledged the issue stating that it was investigating. Shortly after, the company confirmed that some users were seeing recovery signals from API and Sora services.
While the exact cause remains unknown, OpenAI assured that a fix had been implemented.
The incident marked the second time ChatGPT experienced a major disruption this year, which has now crawled into a third considering the difficulties experienced by thousands of users today.
ChatGPT previously went down on January 23 for nearly an hour, with users encountering error messages.
Despite the technical setbacks, OpenAI continues to monitor and address service disruptions as they arise.
