‘Check your bags’ for this when traveling to popular vacation destination

The U.S. Department of State has issued a national travel warning urging travelers to take increased caution when traveling to the popular islands of Turks and Caicos.

The notice ranks traveling to Turks and Caicos as the second-highest risk level, noting travelers should “exercise increased caution,” due to crime.

“Most crime occurs in Providenciales. Police may have limited investigatory resources,” the warning states. “U.S. Embassy Nassau, located in The Bahamas, provides consular services (including assistance to victims of crime) for U.S. citizens in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

The Department of State reminds those planning a trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands traveling with firearms and ammunition — including single bullets brought by mistake in carry-on bags or luggage — is illegal.

“Police strictly enforce these laws, even at the airport when travelers are leaving,” the notice reads. “Travelers face arrest, jail time, and heavy fines.”

In some cases, U.S. citizens have been detained and unable to leave the islands for several weeks after bullets were discovered in their luggage.

Feds warn that those found with contraband such as bullets can face up to 12 or more years in prison — and though the law “allows for some exceptions and discretion,” the Department of State cannot guarantee your release.

The agency suggests travelers visiting here to:

  • Check your luggage for bullets and firearms before leaving the United States.
  • Avoid walking alone and at night.
  • Do not answer your hotel/residence unless you know who it is.
  • Do not resist a robbery attempt.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations.
  • Review the Traveler’s Checklist.
  • Visit the CDC page for the latest Travel Health Information related to your travel.
  • Buy insurance before you travel.
