Wednesday notes…
- A MILESTONE: Tonight’s game will be the Cubs’ 10,000th since 1962, when the National League added its first two expansion teams, the Colt .45s (today’s Astros) and Mets. In the NL’s Expansion Era, the Cubs have won 4,854 games, lost 5,132 and tied 13 for a winning percentage of .486.From 1901-61, when the league had just eight teams, their percentage was .525 in 9,367 games: 4,867 wins, 4,411 losses and 89 ties. The Cubs have played 5,018 games at home since 1962, winning 2,622, losing 2,387 and tying 9, for a percentage of .523.Of their 4,981 games on the road, they have won 2,232, lost 2,745 and tied 4, for a percentage of .449. - AN ODDITY: The Cubs can win the season series against the Dodgers with a victory tonight. Beginning in 2016, they have won the series in each even-numbered year and lost it in each odd-numbered year. They won four games and lost two in 2024. The last time the Cubs won back-to-back season series against the Dodgers was in 2005-06, when they won four of six games both years. The three times before that were in 1995-96 (7-5 and 8-5), 1971-72 (both 8-4) . . . and 1944-45 (both 14-8). - AN EARLY GOODBYE: Today’s game will tie for the earliest date on which the Cubs and Dodgers have completed their season series. They also finished on April 23 in 2023. Their next earliest finale was on May 4, 2011. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- POWER AND SPEED:
Through 25 games this season the @Cubs have hit 37 home runs. They have also notched 35 stolen bases.

Here are today’s particulars.
Cubs lineup:
Dodgers lineup:
Matthew Boyd, LHP vs. Ben Casparius, RHP
So far, Matthew Boyd has been an excellent signing for the Cubs. All four of his starts have been at least good, and two have been excellent.
Against the Dodgers April 11 at Dodger Stadium, Boyd allowed three runs in six innings, all the runs scoring on a three-run homer by Tommy Edman, the only runs of the game. Other than that, Boyd shut the Dodgers down. Hopefully he can do the same tonight.
Edman just kills the Cubs. In nine games vs. the Cubs since he came to the Dodgers last year, Edman is batting .324/.359/.891 (12-for-37) with seven home runs. Just don’t even pitch to the guy.
The Dodgers are having a bullpen game tonight with Ben Casparius as the opener. Beyond that… who knows?
Casparius is a reliever who has maxed out at 47 pitches this year. He threw 23 pitches against the Rangers on Sunday, so he’s likely to be limited tonight.
Last time Casparius faced the Cubs, April 12 in Los Angeles, they torched him for six runs in less than two innings, including a home run by Carson Kelly.
More of that, please.
Today’s game is on Marquee Sports Network. You can find out if Marquee is available via a provider in your area here. It’s also on MLB Network (outside the Cubs and Dodgers market territories).
