Commanders secure perfect Deebo Samuel insurance policy on Day 3

Adam Peters has surrounded Jayden Daniels with everything possible to ensure his second NFL season goes as well, if not better, than his first. Another example of this strategy kicked off Day 3 for the Washington Commanders in the 2025 draft.

Daniels is a superstar. The Commanders have an urgent need to maximize his rookie contract before things get more expensive to keep him around. Peters has experience with this from his time working around Brock Purdy on the San Francisco 49ers. He’s got something even more special on his hands in D.C.

The Commanders brought two new offensive tackles in to protect Daniels. They traded for Deebo Samuel Sr. and added another potential contributor to the wideout room at No. 128 overall.

Commanders must scheme things effectively for Jaylin Lane

Jaylin Lane has a lot of likable traits. The Virginia Tech prospect is a local guy who thrives with the football in his hands. He makes things happen in space and is incredibly elusive in the open field. This looks like the perfect scheme fit for Kliff Kingsbury and Daniels.

Kingsbury likes to get the football out quickly. He’s got pass-catching personnel to accomplish this feat with more effectiveness. Something that could also take the heat off Daniels along the way.

Lane isn’t the biggest. But having a low center of gravity works in his favor. The Commanders have high hopes for Samuel, but this represents a decent insurance policy if the All-Pro suffers any injury issues or struggles to produce the goods.

Peters is always thinking with the long term in mind. He knows what Samuel can do better than anybody. He also knows that the Commanders need someone a little similar if this ends up being a one-year arrangement for some reason.

Lane could be exactly that with a little extra polish. Scheming things effectively is key given his lack of legitimate size, but Kingsbury should already be devising ways to make this happen with minimal fuss.

If everything goes well, there should be nobody happier than Daniels.
