Could former Commanders quarterback be traded during draft weekend?

After acquiring quarterback Sam Howell from the Washington Commanders last offseason, Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider spoke as if he believed Howell could be a future starter.

Now, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Howell could again be on the move. In his column this week regarding the latest buzz surrounding the 2025 NFL draft, Schefter offered the following on the former Commanders’ quarterback:

The team already has been incredibly busy at the position this offseason. It traded Geno Smith to the Raiders for a third-round pick, then signed free agents Sam Darnold and Drew Lock. It still could wind up trading Sam Howell while entertaining the possibility of drafting another quarterback, per sources.

Once Seattle signed Lock, it opened up the possibility of a potential trade of Howell, whom the Seahawks traded for just over a year ago in a deal with Washington. Howell is available, and if the Seahawks wind up trading him this weekend, it would open up the possibility of drafting just the third quarterback during Schneider’s tenure.

Not only did Seattle trade last year’s starter, Geno Smith, but they also spent big on free-agent Sam Darnold. Additionally, the Seahawks’ signing of Drew Lock all but sealed Howell’s fate. Considering Howell has one year remaining on his cheap rookie contract, you’d think he’d be the perfect third quarterback for Seattle next season.

Schneider and head coach Mike Macdonald saw enough of Howell in his two appearances last season. Howell completed five of 14 passes for 24 yards with one interception and took four sacks.

Remember when part of Washington’s fan base wanted the Commanders to avoid drafting a rookie quarterback last offseason and build around Howell? Now, Howell could be playing on his third team in four seasons.
