Daryl Hannah Stands With Ukraine At Oscars After Trump-Zelensky Showdown: “Slava Ukraine!”

Halfway through an Oscar ceremony largely void of politics until that point, Daryl Hannah stood out. The Kill Bill star was a presenter to mark the 20th anniversary of Quentin Tarantino film’s Part 2 release. As she walked on stage, Hannah went off script, starting her remarks with “Slava Ukraine!”

She then went on to read off the Telepromter, presenting the award for Best Editing.

“Slava Ukraine,” which means Glory to Ukraine (original Слава Україні!), carries a lot of symbolism. The salute, which also serves as battle cry of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stands for the Ukrainian people striving for sovereignty and fighting foreign aggression.

Hannah’s defiant shoutout comes two days after the stunning Oval Office showdown between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which had the American president at points shouting at the Ukrainian leader on live television.

With the U.S.’ future support for the Eastern European nation in serious doubt, Zelensky quickly left for Europe where British and other leaders have been reaffirming their backing for Ukraine in its war with Russia.
