Horry County Fire Rescue has warned South Carolina motorists against driving as the Carolina Forest wildfire continues to smolder in the region.

As of Sunday evening, the fire had spread across 1,600 acres and was at 30 percent containment, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

In a Monday morning smoke notice, the fire service warned of driving in near the Carolina Forest Boulevard area due to poor visibility and movement of apparatus to try and put out the blaze.

“Due to the active Carolina Forest-area wildfire, there is heavy, low-hanging smoke blanketed across the area this morning,” it said.

This will limit some visibility for motorists and residents. If you can avoid driving in the general Carolina Forest Boulevard area, that would be helpful, as there will be lots of public safety apparatus on the move.

Horry County Schools will run on a regular schedule on Monday based on re-entry protocols into several Carolina Forest neighborhoods, district officials said on Sunday.

“We recognize that many students, their families and staff may still be affected by the wildfires. We are committed to being flexible and working with each individual on a case-by-case basis tomorrow,” spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier said in a statement.

“If you or your family are experiencing challenges due to the fires, we encourage you to reach out to your school to discuss your specific circumstances and needs.”
