Reese McGuire made an immediate impact for the Chicago Cubs in his first game with the club.

The former Boston Red Sox catch hit two home runs — including one in his first at-bat — to propel Chicago to an 11-8 comeback win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday after being recalled from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day.

It marked the first time McGuire played in an MLB game since July 2024 while he was with the Red Sox.

“I’m just thankful for this opportunity to be back here,” an emotional McGuire told Marquee Sports Network’s Taylor McGregor after the game. “What a team to be a part of, and that was a fun game. I worked really hard to get back here.”

McGuire’s first home run came in his first at-bat. The second came in the eighth inning which tied the game at 8-8 en route to the comeback victory. He originally wasn’t in Sunday’s starting lineup, but a late scratch of Carson Kelly due to illness.

The veteran catcher spent three seasons with the Red Sox before he was designated for assignment last June. In 161 games for Boston, he batted .264 with a .315 on-base percentage, seven home runs, 20 doubles and 46 RBI.

McGuire signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in January. He was released on May 16 but returned to the Windy City and assigned to Triple-A last week.
