On Tuesday, independent entertainment company A24 announced its upcoming Anthony Bourdain biopic—and the stars at its helm. “The Holdovers” actor Dominic Sessa will officially take on the role of the legendary chef, author, and television personality, while Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas will also appear in the film—though his role has not yet been confirmed.

The film, titled “Tony,” will center on Bourdain’s life as a young, burgeoning chef in the 1970s while working and living in Provincetown, Massachusetts (two years before he actually attended culinary school). Variety reports that filming will begin next month with acclaimed director Matt Johnson at the helm. The script was written by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe.

Shortly after the news was announced, fans flooded the Instagram comment section to praise the casting and share their excitement for the upcoming flick. “HELL YEAHHH OMG MY BOY IS BOOKED AND BUSYYY,” one user joked of Sessa’s new role. “Matt Johnson is the perfect pick for this,” another added of the director pick. “SESSA & MATT JOHNSON COOKING 🍳♨️,” a third person wrote.

Others commented: “This is a biopic I can get behind” and simply “I’m sat.”

“I’m ready to be emotionally demolished by this biopic,” someone else added.

This won’t be the first time Bourdain’s life has been memorialized. Following his tragic death by suicide in 2018, Morgan Neville released a documentary titled Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain. One year later, in 2022, Charles Leerhsen released his own unauthorized biography, Down and Out in Paradise: The Life of Anthony Bourdain.

However, no one captured Bourdain’s life quite like Bourdain himself. The former executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles chronicled his life in the 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly and wrote five more books throughout his life. He also hosted several beloved series, including Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, and A Cook’s Tour.
