COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 20-year-old Texas bodybuilding competitor and coach who was attending the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus has died after reportedly suffering from complications from “severe dehydration.”
The Columbus Dispatch reports the Franklin County Coroner’s Office has not released a cause of death for Jodi Vance, a resident of Amarillo, Texas, who died Thursday after being taken to Grant Medical Center from the festival at the Sonesta Columbus Downtown hotel.
However, her family posted on social media that Vance’s heart stopped because of complications from “severe dehydration.”
“Despite all efforts by the hospital, they were unable to revive her,” the post says. “She was a beautiful person inside and out and she will be missed every single day. This was sudden and unexpected. Please give her family time to process this loss in peace. If anyone takes anything from this, please put your heath first.”
Men’s Fitness reports Vance was a “rising star” among competitive bodybuilders, finishing third in the 2024 NPC Battle of Texas. Vance was competing in the Arnold but was there in a coaching capacity, Men’s Fitness reports.
She reportedly began feeling ill backstage, vomiting and showing other signs of dehydration, Men’s Fitness reports.
People reports that Justin Mihaly, Vance’s trainer, posted a video on Instagram saying he believes Vance was taking “dangerous” substances leading to dehydration, “a significant error that should not be taken lightly.” Mihaly says in the video that Vance’s mother approved of him sharing the information.
“You’re welcome to direct your blame towards me if that’s how you believe we can best honor Jodi,” Mihaly says in the video. He said Vance used two “extremely hazardous substances” to improve her physique “without my knowledge” or “approval.”
“We’re all experiencing grief,” Mihaly says. “Jodi was freaking loved.”
