First Alert: Severe storms knocking down trees and power lines overnight

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been extended into parts of metro Atlanta as severe storms continue through north Georgia. The strongest storms are capable of producing 60mph winds and very heavy rain. We’ve already had numerous reports of trees down and power outages, and we expect those numbers to increase through the overnight hours.

First Alert Weather Day | Severe storms overnight

A line of heavy rain and embedded storms moves into Atlanta around 2 a.m. A few downpours may include wind gusts up to 60 MPH. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out. The severe storms will move out of our viewing area by 5am.

Stray severe storms with damaging winds are possible, with the highest risk existing in far West Georgia.(WANF)

Following rain and storms, temperatures tumble later Wednesday afternoon. Gusty breezes will make it feel even chillier. A few mountain snow showers are possible late Wednesday afternoon, on into the evening. Sprinkles, snow flurries and/or sleet pellets may also fall in the metro during the evening – no accumulation.
