SAN FRANCISCO — One pitch after Mariners right fielder Victor Robles was carted off the field with an apparent left arm injury, Wilmer Flores delivered a pinch-hit single off Gregory Santos to drive in Luis Matos for the winning run, sending the San Francisco Giants to a 5-4 victory and series sweep of Seattle at Oracle Park.
Robles made an incredible catch crashing into the netting in foul territory for the second out of the inning. The game was delayed for nearly 10 minutes as Robles, in obvious pain, was checked on by Mariners teammates and trainers.
Robles was eventually carted off the field, holding his left wrist.
With the Mariners down to their final strike in the top of the ninth, Randy Arozarena hit a clutch double to left field off Camilo Doval, scoring Roles from third to tie it up at 4-4.
Mike Yastrzemski had hit a three-run home run to spoil a homecoming for Bryan Woo in the fourth inning.
At 3-7, the Mariners are off to their worst 10-game start since 2017. They begin a six-game homestand against the AL West rival Astros on Monday night.
Julio Rodriguez homered out to left in the first inning and Cal Raleigh homered out to right in the third off Giants starter Jordan Hicks, and Woo was sharp through three shutout innings as the Mariners built a 2-0 lead.
The Giants (8-1) took control in the fourth inning, scoring all four of their runs off Woo, an Oakland native who grew up rooting for the Giants.
Heliot Ramos singled sharply to right field, driving in Willy Adames from second base. Adames slid home safely after the throw from Victor Robles was late.
On the next pitch, Woo threw a 96-mph fastball that caught too much of the plate, and Yastrzemski sent it over the fence in left field for opposite-field, three-run homer to give the Giants a 4-2 lead.
It was the first homer of the season for Yastrzemski, a 2012 Mariners draft pick (he didn’t sign) and the grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski.
Woo completed six innings, allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
In the sixth inning, Ryan Bliss had the Mariners’ lone hit with runners in scoring position, sending a sharp single to left field to score Luke Raley from second.
In the eighth inning, the Mariners had a chance to bring him the tying run after pinch-hit singles from Donovan Solano and Mitch Garver to lead off the inning.
But Dylan Moore popped up for the first out and Bliss grounded into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
Mariners were 1 for 8 today with runners in scoring position Sunday and 8 for 66 (.121) through 10 games.
