Gregory Hearst Millen Obituary April 7, 2025 – Reynolds Funeral Home – Turner

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Hearst Millen, at the young age of 67. Greg died on Monday, April 7th unexpectedly from a cardiovascular event.

Greg is survived by his high school sweetheart and life partner, Ann Millen; this summer would have marked their 45th wedding anniversary. He was a loving and devoted father to his children Allie (Mike Mason), Emily (Garrett Kean), Caroline (Mike Tobin), and Charlie (Marissa DiNardo). “Papa” was adored by his eight grandchildren (Beau, Pippa, Beatrice, Oscar, Louie, June, Wallace, and Penelope).

Surrounded by his family, Greg was most happy at the cottage. When he wasn’t sipping a latté on the dock, he was running the roads year-round, and most recently testing his athleticism on the ski hill.

Greg was a professional hockey player in the NHL and was best known for his rare right-handed catching stance. He was drafted to the Pittsburgh Penguins and went on to play with the Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings. After 14 years, he traded in his goalie pads for a headset, beginning a long and celebrated career in broadcasting. He spent over 30 years in the booth sharing his love for the game as a colour commentator with SportsNet, and CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada; he covered three Olympics and 12 Stanley Cup finals. Greg was not only revered at the rink, he was also a pillar in the community. He built and established summer goalie camps in Peterborough, Ontario and co-founded the Peterborough Professional Hockey Alumni Association (PPHAA). Greg lived by his motto: “There’s no ‘I’ in TEAM” and he was truly a team player. His passion for mentorship led him to complete a Master of Leadership from the University of Guelph. He went on to become an instructor of Leadership Development at Fleming College.

Beyond his long list of accomplishments, Greg was most known for his humility, positivity, and his infectious laugh. He had a unique ability to put people at ease and bring a smile to their faces. Greg will be greatly missed by friends, fans, and family alike.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, ALS Canada, or the Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Greg’s family, friends, and colleagues on Thursday, April 17th at 1pm (doors open at 12:30pm), at The Peterborough Memorial Centre, 151 Lansdowne Street West, Peterborough.
