KANSAS CITY — Tanner Bibee will miss today’s season-opening start because of illness.
Ben Lively will start in his place.
Bibee is suffering from gastroenteritis. This was going to be the first opening day start of his career.
On Wednesday Bibee became ill. He’s was feeling better Thursday, but couldn’t keep much food down. Bibee, who just signed a five-year $48 million extension, was coming off an excellent spring in which he went 3-0 with a with a 1.88 ERA. He allowed three eanred run in 14 1/3 innings with 12 strikeouts.
The Guardians have also reshuffled their rotation for Saturday and Sunday, saying Bibee could come back and pitch one of those games.
Lively also had a good spring. He went 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five Cactus League starts. He struck out 14 in 18 2/3 innings.
Last year Lively kept the rotation afloat by going 13-10 with a 3.81 ERA in 29 starts.
Roster news: The Guardians made it offical on Thursday by adding outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez as their 26th man.
