Get ready to fall in love all over again, because a Heartstopper movie is coming.

On April 22, Netflix announced that the fan-favorite series — which is based on the graphic novels by Alice Oseman — will end with a feature film, rather than a fourth and final season.

Heartstopper — which first premiered in April 2022 and has won five Children’s and Family Emmy Awards — follows the romance between high school teens Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor).

The Heartstopper film will adapt Oseman’s upcoming sixth and final Heartstopper novel and the 2020 Nick and Charlie novella, exploring how milestones like college impact Nick and Charlie’s relationship.

“I’m deeply relieved and so excited about this new creative venture,” Oseman wrote on Instagram. “I’ve written the script and we’re hard at work already. I’ll be able to talk about it more very soon, but for now let’s CELEBRATE! Heartstopper is getting its ending!!!!!!”

The Heartstopper movie will pick up after the season 3 finale, when Nick and Charlie reached a new level of intimacy.

According to the film’s official synopsis, the couple will face their biggest hurdle yet as “Nick prepares to leave for university and the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them.”

The movie will be based on Oseman’s 2020 Nick and Charlie novella and the upcoming sixth and final Heartstopper graphic novel, which does not currently have a release date.

In the past, Oseman — who uses both she/her and they/them pronouns — has said that she wants the sixth book to hit stores before the series comes to an official close.

“I really, extremely, devoutly need the Volume 6 book to come out before season 4 comes out, so people experience the end of the story from the books first,” they previously told Patreon subscribers, per Teen Vogue

Kit Connor and Joe Locke are the only confirmed members of the Heartstopper movie cast. They will star in the film and serve as executive producers.

Connor first teased the project while speaking to Vogue in April 2025 — just days before Netflix’s big announcement.

“I’d definitely like to do [a series finale] as long as it’s done right,” he said. “I just want to make sure that we keep the heart in it. So, we are working on something and hopefully we’re making it happen. But we’ll see. No promises. I don’t want to do it if it’s not right.”

However, Nick and Charlie’s friends — including Elle Argent (Yasmin Finney), Tao Xu (William Gao), Isaac Henderson (Tobie Donovan) and more — will likely make appearances. Per Netflix’s Tudum, the group is “navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on.”

Wash Westmoreland will direct the Heartstopper feature film. His past credits include 2014’s Still Alice and 2018’s Colette.

Oseman will serve as the project’s screenwriter and executive producer, with assistance from Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Euros Lyn and the film’s two stars.

“I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story,” Oseman told Tudum. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”
