Jean Silva rages on the scale as he misses weight at first time of asking for Bryce Mitchell fight at UFC 314

Jean Silva was not happy with circumstances as he came in a pound over weight for his fight with Bryce Mitchell at the first time of asking.

The Brazilian featherweight contender was the final fighter to tip the scales this morning in Miami ahead of UFC 314. He wasn’t the only one to miss weight, but is the highest profile and needed an hour to cut the extra pound as a result, which he did successfully.

While on the scales, Silva shouted at somebody in the front row in Portugese. He then posed for a photo but appeared to confirm he’d be coming back for another effort at making weight for the fight.

As the last man to hit the scales, Jean Silva came in as a man on a mission this morning as he took to the scales. He needed the towel to allow him to strip nude to step on the scale, and appeared to be shouting at someone in the front row with an aggressive message.

“It’s not over,” he is reported to have said. “I’m going to come back and make weight. Bryce Mitchell, I’m going to knock you out.”

After he was briefly calmed down, Silva came in at 147lb, meaning he was a pound over the extended 146lb limit for featherweights. Bryce Mitchell made a very quick appearance earlier in the morning to tip the scales at 146lb.

Silva was successful when given an extra hour to make the weight by the commission and his fight with Mitchell is now official. If he hadn’t made weight at the second time of asking, he would have had to forefit a large percentage of his purse to his rival.

Silva wasn’t the only fighter to miss weight, with Nora Cornolle coming in 2lb over the bantamweight limit at 138lb. The French star takes on Hailey Cowan, but will have to give up a chunk of her purse for their bout, which was moved forward a month from it’s initial date.

Last night, Silva and Mitchell came head-to-head for the final press conference ahead of their fight. The Brazilian insisted that he would send his rival into retirement, but was hit back with an hilarious message by Mitchell.

“I was born with brain damage, brother,” Mitchell said of Silva’s retirement threats, making the Miami crowd erupt in laughter. “I’ll be alright.”

He later mocked Silva’s barking efforts, telling the Brazilian: “I put a lot of dogs down in my day. Those dogs that like to come up to the farm. They kill my animals. They come to harm me and my family and come barking. “You know what they all got in common? They squeal right before they die.”
