Jessica Pegula does something at the Madrid Open that puts her behind Serena Williams on WTA 1000 list

Jessica Pegula started her Madrid Open campaign with an empathic victory.

The American is aiming for a strong run in the Spanish capital after winning just one match at the Stuttgart Open last week.

The 30-year-old took to the court to face Eva Lys to start the tournament, and she dropped just four games on the way to victory.

This is the type of victory Jessica Pegula would have been searching for as she aims to win the Madrid Open for the first time in her career.

Pegula is aiming to go one better at the Madrid Open in 2022, when she reached the final and lost to Ons Jabeur.

On Friday she was very clinical in her match with Lys, which was highlighted with her serving statistics.

The World number three won 65% of her first serve points, and 76% behind her second serve, while converting six of 10 break points.

Pegula strolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory and in the process claimed her 14th match win from her first 20 at WTA 1000 events played on clay among American players.

She trails only 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who leads the way to 16 wins from her first 20 clay court matches at WTA 1000 level.

Pegula is safely through to the third round where she will compete against Moyuka Uchijima.

The Japanese player reached the quarter-finals at the Open de Rouen before arriving in Madrid, and she has continued that form in at the WTA 1000 event.

Uchijima defeated Robin Montgomery in the opening round before coming from behind to upset former champion Jabeur to reach the third round.

This will be the first meeting between these two players and while Pegula will enter as the favourite, Uchijima cannot be underestimated.
