Jets Quarterback Suddenly Retires From NFL in Shocking Announcement

New York Jets quarterback Jordan Travis has informed the team that he is retiring from the National Football League.

Travis, a fifth-round pick out of Florida State University in 2024, sustained a serious injury to his left leg in his final collegiate game in November 2023.

The 24-year-old revealed he has been medically advised to retire.

“On November 18, 2023, my life took an unexpected turn,” Travis said in a statement released by the Jets. “I gave everything I had to the rehab process but despite all my efforts, my leg never responded the way we hoped. After much prayer and consultation with the doctors, medical experts and my agent, I’ve been medically advised to retire from the game I love so deeply.”

Travis sustained the injury in a game against North Alabama. He suffered a fractured and dislocated ankle, was placed in an air cast, and carted off the field.

Travis was in the midst of a Heisman-caliber season, as he led Florida State to an 11-0 record while completing 64.1 percent of his passes for 2,734 yards with 20 touchdowns and two interceptions. He added seven rushing touchdowns on the ground.

Travis ended up finishing fifth in Heisman trophy voting behind wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and quarterbacks Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr., and Jayden Daniels, the latter of which took home the award.

While Travis faced a long road ahead to recovery, the Jets selected him with the 171st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was then placed on the reserve/non-football injury list in August 2024.

Unfortunately, Travis was not able to recover from the devastating injury, and is now retiring from football.

“Jordan has informed us of his intent to retire due to the injury he sustained while at Florida State,” Jets general manager Darren Mougey said in a statement. “It is unfortunate that he was unable to get back on the field after working so hard. We support his decision and wish him only the best.”

Travis also released a handwritten letter on his social media account:

“As I reflect on my journey, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. From having the opportunity to live out my dream at Florida State University to hearing my name called in the NFL Draft.

“I am incredibly thankful for everyone who has poured into me throughout my life and career. To my family and friends — your unwavering support has meant everything to me. To the coaches who believed in me and gave me a chance to play the game I love — thank you. To my teammates — thank you for pushing me, supporting me, and becoming family. I am forever grateful for the locker room memories and brotherhood we built.

“To the entire New York Jets organization — thank you for believing in me and providing me with the opportunity to live out the ultimate dream.

“It is crazy how fast life can change. This is not the ending I had ever imagined, but I do trust the Lord’s plan above all else.

“Thank you to everyone who’s been a part of the ride.”
